Men’s Grooming Today
How to Guides, Personal beauty Comments (4)
Up until the 1950s or so, men as portrayed in the mainstream media looked squeaky-clean, with hair nicely cut and combed, faces clean-shaven and clothing in tip-top fashion. Men back then were ultra-refined when it came to looks. But during the heyday of the hippies, in the ’60s through to the ’70s, long hair for men as well as thick facial hair became the ultimate manly image.
For several decades, the hippy era’s influence that men should be a bit scruffy-looking prevailed, making men shy away from any grooming that would go against their macho image.
But today, with the advent of metrosexualism, more men are getting in touch with their feminine side, becoming more conscious of the way they look. For the modern male, looking good and feeling good ranks high on their agenda. Now that more men are into good grooming, it is essential to talk about what works and what doesn’t for men.
But first off, how is men’s skin different from that of women’s? According to Men’s Health, male skin is, of course, hairier, oilier, 20% thicker, burns up more energy, renews itself faster and can suffer from unique sensitivity issues due to shaving. That is why men’s skin should be treated differently and men should use skin care products that are formulated for men.
There are quite a number of grooming products formulated particularly for men out in the market. Finding the right product for men shouldn’t be rocket science. The local pharmacy is sure to have everything you need to make yourself look good and feel good while still keeping your masculine image. Also, it is best to seek expert advice from a qualified dermatologist so you would know what’s best for your skin type.
Men these days are also concerned about their faces. A lot of men feel inferior when in the company of younger counterparts, so most men shave off their beard and mustache just to look younger and to blend easily with the yuppie crowd. After all, facial hair, if not properly maintained, can add some 10 to 20 years to your looks, making you look a lot older than your age.
But shaving is just not enough. It is also highly recommended for men to take care of their facial skin, if looking young is truly a high-priority issue. Using facial skin care products that are formulated for men should also be incorporated in your daily skin regimen.
Washing your face with a facial cleanser is best to wash away dirt and excess oil. Using soap bars on face should be avoided as regular soap is known to dry skin out, making it susceptible to premature wrinkling.
Occasionally applying facial scrubs is also recommended to remove dead skin cells that can make your face look dull.
To make your manly face look supple, applying moisturizers for men is highly recommended. Using moisturizers after washing the face locks in the moisture that nourishes the skin cells. This makes your face look and feel fresh for longer.
Here’s another tip to make your face looking vibrant and glowing: Massage your face for about 20 to 30 minutes a day. This promotes better blood circulation within the face, making you facial skin look rejuvenated and young-looking.
If your skin has allergic reactions to strong perfumes, choose a shaving cream and aftershave cologne that are both gentle on skin. These days, the explosion of herbal products that include men’s grooming items allows you to choose what’s best for your skin. Choosing herbal products may be best, as most herbal cosmetics contain vital nutrients that make your skin look radiant and healthy.

I like this article because it talks about how is it like to be a “beautiful” man without the negative connotation usually associated with it. These are especially great tips every man should look into. Very basic skin care so they have no excuse not to follow them.
Knowledge is key, of course! Like women, men should also be more sensitive about themselves and the needs of their skin. Being healthy just doesn’t stop at being clean, it’s also about nourishing the skin with all the good stuff– vitamins and nutrients, much-needed moisture, protection from the harsh sun.. There are so many things to consider!
It’s a good thing men are looking more into taking care and understanding themselves these days. At least we won’t have such a hard time looking after them all the time.
Men has his own feminine side and sometimes, there will be times that they need to express it in some way maybe in their way of communicating or expressions or through the way they dress hence some people label them as metrosexuals. But the good news is that even if they are still men, they are very expressive. Since most metrosexuals I know have a very low self esteem and that is why they are now becoming very expressive about themselves.
